The Mediation Ratchet

Diversity Contraction · v9.1 · June 2026
Past a closed-form threshold, the loss of variance becomes irreversible. There is no recovery path.

The Reverse Turing Test established that AI mediation thins the distributional tails of human text. Stabilized Node Watch established that the composition layer drifts on stabilized public-knowledge nodes. The Mediation Ratchet establishes the formal dynamical result that joins these two observations into a single operational claim: past a closed-form threshold, the contraction becomes irreversible.

The model

The system models diversity contraction in semantic substrates under sustained mediation. Three principal variables: D (diversity remaining in the substrate), α (the rate of mediation), g₀ (the substrate’s intrinsic recovery rate in the absence of mediation), p (mediation pressure).

The dynamical system has two stable fixed points and one unstable separatrix. Below the threshold, the substrate’s natural diversity recovery balances mediation pressure: small perturbations decay, and the system recovers. Above the threshold, the same perturbation propagates: diversity contracts toward the lower fixed point, and the system does not return to the higher state under any subsequent reduction of pressure.

The closed-form threshold

The threshold separating the two regimes is exact and computable. α* = p / g₀

When α < α*, diversity contraction is reversible: reducing mediation restores variance. When α > α*, diversity contraction is irreversible: reducing mediation does not restore variance, because the substrate has crossed the separatrix and is now in the basin of the lower fixed point.

What the bifurcation diagram shows

Figure 5 of the deposit plots the bifurcation: for each value of α, the stable fixed points of D. Below α*, a single stable fixed point at high diversity. At α*, the saddle-node bifurcation. Above α*, two stable fixed points (high and low) with the unstable separatrix between them. Trajectories that cross the separatrix do not return.

The political-epistemic claim

The Mediation Ratchet specifies the dynamical condition under which the Meaning Feudalism enclosure becomes structurally unrecoverable. This is not the claim that mediation is presently above threshold. It is the claim that, if mediation pressure exceeds α* on a given substrate, the contraction enters a regime where reduction of pressure does not recover variance — because the substrate’s composition has shifted to the lower fixed point, and the higher fixed point is no longer reachable from where the system now is.

This is the structural reason for urgency. The window during which mediation contraction is reversible is the window during which the substrate’s natural recovery rate exceeds the mediation pressure. The window closes when α first crosses α*. After that crossing, recovery becomes a problem of moving the system across the separatrix — a substantially harder problem than restoring it within a single basin.

The threshold is α* = p / g₀.
